Beijing cabbage (petsai) just recently got literally widespread popularity. Today it is difficult to call a product a rarity, it can be bought in the markets and in shops any day. And even though it is an overseas vegetable, it is easy to grow it on the garden. How to grow, care for and collect Chinese cabbage will be discussed below in the article.

Where and when to plant?

Seeds and seedlings Petsay

A place to plant Beijing cabbage is to choose with alternate shade. She does not like heat, and therefore rarely grown in southern countries, but if you find a place in the shade, the chance of high yield will increase. The best predecessors of the culture are legumes, greens, root vegetables and cucumbers. The soil must not be acidic, otherwise the plant will not develop.

Petsai can be grown in open ground and in the greenhouse. It will give a crop both there and there, the only difference is that in the greenhouse the harvest will be earlier.

Depending on the type of greenhouse, cabbage can be planted in different months. For example, if the room is equipped with heating, the disembarkation can be started from the beginning of March, since the temperature can be easily settled. At 4-5 degrees, the plant is already germinating, and at 16-18 degrees - will actively develop. If the greenhouse is not heated, the plant is planted closer to April, and the seedling method is used. During planting seedlings in an unheated greenhouse should be about 16-18 degrees Celsius.

Terms and method of landing

The cultivation of Beijing cabbage in the open ground is carried out by the seedling method and seeds. Seedlings are planted in early May, when the earth is well warmed. Seeds are sown in early May or early June, depending on the region and weather. For the procedure it is important that the earth was warm, and at night there was no frost. Sharp temperature drops for a young culture are harmful.

Of course, to get a big harvest, it is important to choose the right seeds, because autumn varieties are not planted in the spring. If the varieties are difficult to understand, it is worth taking the universal ones: “Chinese choice,” “F1 Miss China.”

Planting Beijing cabbage in the greenhouse

The plant does not like transplants, so peat cups are ideal for seedlings. Seedlings are made from the beginning of April. Seeds deepen by 0.5-1 cm to a mixture of peat and sod in a 1: 1 ratio. Then the earth is watered, covered with foil and the containers are set aside in a dark place. After 2-3 days, when shoots sprung, seedlings are transferred to the lighted place and open the film. Watering and loosening are carried out regularly, and fertilizing contribute as needed.

Seeds before planting do not soak, from this there will be no proc. Immediately, from a purchased package they put in a prepared place.

Planting Beijing cabbage in open ground

In the greenhouse, the petsai are sown according to the scheme - 70x40 cm. In the open ground, a 50x30 cm scheme is used. When the seedling method is used, the seedlings should be carefully bred so that they do not turn out to be too deep, otherwise the cabbage will rot.

If seeds are planted in the open ground, for this, wells are made at a distance of 30 cm from each other. Fertilizers are applied to them (urea, ash or humus). They make a distance of 40 cm between the rows. It is believed that the more space each seedling has, the later they will have arrows. Seeds are planted to a depth of 1-2 cm after the wells are watered and the water is absorbed. Then they are powdered with earth or ash and covered with a film. It is removed after 4-6 days, when shoots appeared.

Growing Chinese cabbage in the open field and in the greenhouse is almost the same as when growing any other variety of cabbage, but with its own subtleties.

Petsai Care

  • Watering should be moderate and only by sprinkling. This is done not often, but it is impossible to allow the soil to dry out.
  • Quite often weed it, but in such a way that the earth does not pour on the plant. All weeds are pulled out, because when cutting with a hoe, there is still a harmful living root of the weed, which takes nutrients from the soil.
  • Peking cabbage is fertilized from time to time with urea and mullein, starting from the moment of planting until the beginning of the formation of heads.
  • It is recommended in advance to acquire some high-quality pest remedies, as the culture is attacked by them year after year.
  • Large cabbages require a lot of space, so as the leaves close together, it is recommended to remove the plants through one in a row so that there is 20 cm of free space between crops.

When and how to harvest?

Crop storage of Peking cabbage

Many gardeners are convinced that cultivating Peking cabbage in the open field or greenhouse is a very troublesome business, and it is almost impossible to get a rich harvest. However, if you follow the points described above - the result will not take long. Yes, this culture is capricious, but if you can successfully grow white cabbage in the garden, then Beijing also succeeds.

It is possible to collect cabbage after the formation of 10 large leaves with a length of more than 10 cm each or after the last, upper leaflets are closed. The period of development and maturation takes about 2 months, that is, if desired, it can be grown several times over the course of a year. At the same time, adults, autumn cabbages are resistant to temperatures as low as 4 degrees, so there is no need to rush to collect them.

It is recommended to keep only autumn varieties, because the early ones are not suitable for this - they are immediately eaten. Store Peking cabbage at a temperature of from 0 to +5 degrees Celsius. Vegetables are laid horizontally, leaving gaps between them, to avoid the formation of moisture and subsequent rotting.
